EC medium (or EC Broth, or Escherichia coli Broth) is a selective and differential broth designed specifically for the detection and confirmation of Escherichia coli and fecal coliforms from water and food samples using the Most Probable (MPN) method. It uses bile salts to inhibit gram-positive bacteria and uses elevated temperature to distinguish fecal coliforms from (Incubated at 44.5°C for 24 hours) from coliforms (37°C).

Gas production in the inverted vial (Durham tube) or dissolved gas that forms fine bubbles when slightly agitated is a positive reaction indicating the presence of fecal coliforms.
